White City – A Key Opportunity Area in West London
White City is a key regeneration and opportunity area in West London, best known as the home of the BBC Television Centre and Westfield Shopping Centre. Over the years, White City has been transformed into a key business district and hub for the creative industries and life science sector as well as a prime west London residential address neighboring Notting Hill and Holland Park.
White City is named after a big exhibition that took place in 1908, where the grand pavilions were painted white or decorated in white marble, making it “The Great White City”. Until well into the 19th century, White City was still a desolate area of farmlands and brickfields. As part of the area’s significant transformation backed by the Mayor of London and the Hammersmith & Fulham Council, the White City Opportunity Area covers 110 hectares with the potential for 7,000 new homes and 2,000 new jobs by 2041.
When we mention White City, Westfield London must be the first thing that comes to mind – the ultimate destination for London’s best day out. With the anchor tenant John Lewis, the shopping mall serves as the retail heartbeat of White City and is a wonderful facility for residents and businesses alike to have near home. Living close to amenities has been an extremely popular concept in Hong Kong where estates are built over shopping malls which reduces the need for long commutes hence enhancing overall quality of life.
At the heart of White City’s regeneration is the redevelopment of the iconic BBC’s Television Centre, into a mixed-used development including residential, TV recording studios, offices as well as a members-only club, Soho House which also include a 45-room hotel, White City House. This is a destination for many well-known celebs and people in the creative and design industry.
