Clapham

Clapham has it all

In the spotlight this month, we feature South London’s affluent residential suburb of Clapham, which is best known for the green expanses of Clapham Common,

highly rated state schools, elegant period properties, and of course, bustling Clapham High Street’s nightlife. Clapham is also home to some of London’s biggest celeb names including Margot Robbie, Vivienne Westwood, Gordon Ramsay, and Joanna Lumley!

One of Clapham’s most treasured spots is definitely Clapham Common, a large 89 hectare in size urban park, that being one of London’s largest and oldest public open spaces. The park offers several outdoor recreational activities, sports facilities and hosts several music festivals and events throughout the year. The perfect spot for a picnic, a game or even just a walk around nature, the park is an integral part of the local life in Clapham.

Located on the northeast corner of the Common is Clapham Old Town, a historic area with charming streets, shops, cafes, and restaurants. Characterised by a wealth of stunning Georgian and Victorian architecture, Clapham Old Town is the place to experience the real village, traditional market town atmosphere.

Venn Street Market is an award-winning local community food market that operates every Saturday, Venn Street Market is one of the best weekend destinations for families, foodies and home chefs seeking high-quality, fresh produce, gourmet street food. During Christmas, it also transforms into a festive-themed market, making it perfect to enjoy the Christmas in London vibe, without being in busy Central London.

Another place to experience a taste of Clapham is the Clapham Picturehouse, an iconic independent cinema. It is more than just a cinema, it’s a thriving cultural hub that brings film, food, and the local Clapham community together. The building itself is a historic landmark that opened in 1910.

Over the years, Clapham has seen significant regeneration which includes the masterplans for Winstanley Estate and York Road as well as the Clapham Park regeneration project.

Both projects are expected to deliver a total of over 5,000 new homes for Clapham by 2035, along with high-quality open public space, new community facilities new workspaces, and shops. These regenerations will deliver an attractive new neighbourhood, where people are proud to work, visit, and call home.
