Picturesque City of Cambridge

In this month’s spotlight, we feature one of the most famous cities in England, located in the east of England with a reputation for being slightly quieter yet full of charms and hidden gems. Cambridge is undoubtedly internationally renowned as the home of the oldest and most prestigious University of Cambridge. Having a long history of academic excellence and groundbreaking research, scholars from all around the world are attracted to this quaint city.

Cambridge’s roots trace back to Roman times, but it rose to prominence in the 13th century with the establishment of the University of Cambridge. Comprising 31 colleges, the University of Cambridge is known for its world-class academic programs and notable alumni, including scientific luminaries like Issac Newton and Charles Darwin. These colleges are an integral part of the city, growing over the years to include new, state-of-the-art facilities to accompany the historic buildings. With the stunning architecture, gardens, and cultural activities, it helps to attract more than 7.6 million visitors a year.

Analysis of economic impact found the university adds nearly £30 billion to the UK economy every year and supports more than 86,000 jobs across the UK through Cambridge’s thriving tech and biotech sector – Silicon Fen’s research, entrepreneurial activities, tourism, and enhanced value that graduates bring to employment. Being Europe’s largest technology cluster, Silicon Fen has more than 5,000 firms, around 61,000 employees with a combined annual revenue of more than £15.5 billion. One of the largest biomedical research clusters in the world – the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, includes top global companies and headquarters of AstraZeneca, Illumina, GSK, Microsoft, Apple, and more that boosts £2 billion to the UK economy. The future continues to look promising, with the university’s continuous investment and attracting the largest investment per capita in Europe.

Looking for a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city? Cambridge is known for its beautiful green spaces. Punting on the River Cam is also a must-do activity when in Cambridge, offering a unique perspective of the city’s picturesque scenery and famous architecture like King’s College Chapel and Trinity and St. John’s Colleges. A stroll through the charming streets of the city centre allows one to see the remarkable Gothic and medieval architecture of Cambridge.

In the last UK census, it shows that more than 300,000 people are living in Greater Cambridge and 65% of tenants are in science and research. To help enhance and grow the city, a huge amount is invested in city regeneration. The Hill Group is an award-winning housebuilder and one of the leading developers creating exceptional homes and sustainable communities. Its significant partnership with the City Council and Marshall delivers Eddington Northwest Cambridge Development and Marleigh offering more than 6,000 new residential, dormitories, commercial, retail, academic, and community centres.

The new Cambridge East development is the redevelopment of Cambridge Airport to create a new urban quarter that transforms the east of the city. Creating 7,000+ new residential homes, 9,000+ new jobs, and 10,000 sqm retail space, where people can live and work all within 15-minute walking distance.

According to Savills Research, the average residential transaction value in the city is £588,000. The strong employment market in Cambridge has supported values in Cambridge and the surrounding areas. A lack of stock on the market, coupled with high demand, has also defined the rental market. The annual rental growth was over 8%. Cambridge continued its position as a world-leading centre of innovation relying on tackling infrastructure, commercial accessibility, and housing affordability.
