Luxury living in South Lantau - Hong Kong's hidden gem

Turquoise water laps on to white sand beaches, water buffalo roam freely against a backdrop of cloud-ringed mountains and lush forest. This is Hong Kong as you've never seen it before.

A world away from the chaos of high-rise city living, picturesque South Lantau is one of the region's best-kept secrets. Traditionally expats have looked to the Peak and South Side for luxury living, privacy, and greenery, but now increasing numbers are discovering Lantau living offers all these and more.

Drawn in by the billion-dollar views, sizeable living space, and great value property prices - particularly in contrast to the spiraling costs of Hong Kong island - most who come here fall in love with this unique area. And for many, South Lantau provides something few places can match - somewhere to settle and call home.

South Lantau has a choice of more than 40 kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, and has a lively community atmosphere with special events most months. Plus, driving on the island is permit-only, which creates a safe, quiet space for children to grow and play, and with so much to do - family life here is never boring.

Heritage lovers will adore the stilt houses of historic Tai O, while beach babes have endless picturesque bays to choose from. Most popular are the beaches of Pui O, a hit with surfers and skaters as well as families, and Cheung Sha – one of Hong Kong's longest sandy shores, a hotspot for swimming and watersports for all ages. Head to Mavericks Bar and Diner for cold beers and cocktails and enjoy the lively weekend vibe, or for something more serene, hit the Beach House restaurant which is always a crowd-pleaser. There are plenty of seaside eateries around, giving the whole area a perpetual holiday resort atmosphere.

Nestled in the heart of this idyllic location is a new luxury residence, Whitesands. An exclusive enclave of 28 detached 3 and 4 bedroom homes. Each house comes with its own view of the sea, front and back gardens, as well as a roof terrace, while larger houses come with private swimming pools. Perfectly located for residents to enjoy the best of all worlds - it is a short distance to the beach, seaside eateries, and the hiking trails but also an easy drive to Hong Kong international Airport and the city centre.

It's not just the expats who have fallen for Lantau's charms, it’s become a favourite stop for tourists, and it has caught the eye of executives from mainland China who work in the SAR. The government too has high hopes - the completion of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge will put the island at the heart of plans to develop the Pearl River Delta as a commercial and tourism hub. With this added infrastructure investment, property prices are expected to jump in coming years, making now an ideal to time to dive into Lantau life.
